List of Kalonzo Allies Who Joined Ruto’s Event, Sparking Total Confusion in Opposition

A stunning display of political fluidity unfolded in Kenya's Ukambani region as key allies of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka broke ranks to warmly welcome President William Ruto during his multi-day developmental tour.

The unexpected camaraderie has plunged the opposition into disarray, raising questions about the unity of the Azimio la Umoja coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

The tour, which kicked off on November 12 in Makueni County, saw Ruto inspect and launch projects amid cheers from crowds.

But the real shock came from the entourage: Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior and Senator Dan Maanzo, both staunch Kalonzo loyalists, flanked the president throughout the day.

Previously vocal critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration, the duo had boycotted Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui on October 20, leaving Governor Julius Malombe to host alone.

They even joined Kalonzo's recent tribute to the late Raila Odinga at Opoda Farm, signaling unwavering opposition solidarity.

Images captured the trio in jovial exchanges, laughing as they toured affordable housing sites projects Maanzo, a commissioner on the People’s Restorative and Justice Commission, had lambasted as ineffective just months ago.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, spearheading efforts to woo Kalonzo into a "broad-based" alliance, walked alongside, underscoring the administration's charm offensive.

Tensions peaked when Kilonzo Jr. petitioned Ruto for urgent interventions on county projects. In a pointed retort, Ruto declared, "Unajua huyu junior ni kiongozi mzuri... Huyu junior anahitaji ruhusa ya mtu yeyote kufanya kazi na mimi. Sisi tumeajiriwa na wananchi; hatuna ruhusa ya mtu."

The Swahili remark, translated as affirming Kilonzo's autonomy without needing "anyone's permission" a veiled jab at Kalonzo drew applause but stunned observers.

Labour CS Alfred Mutua piled on, mocking Kilonzo's pleas: Despite his opposition stance, Mutua quipped, the projects would outlast Ruto's term, yet the president was destined for re-election in 2027.

The defections have sparked fury in opposition circles. Wiper insiders whisper of "betrayal," with social media ablaze over fractured loyalties.

As Ruto presses into Machakos next, eyes are on whether more Kalonzo allies will cross over or if this is a calculated ploy to extract concessions.
