The Luo Council of Elders has firmly dismissed reports claiming it endorsed a new political kingpin for the Luo community after Raila Odinga’s death.
The council clarified that the circulating information was misleading and based on misinterpretations.
Council chairman Odungi Randa denied allegations that the elders had chosen Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi as Raila’s successor.
He emphasized that no political endorsement had occurred despite the heightened public and political speculation.
Randa explained that their recent visit to Wandayi’s rural home in Ugunja, Siaya County was purely social.
He reiterated that the meeting had no political agenda and should not be viewed as support for any candidate.
He further stated that many leaders were seeking influence within the Luo community, but the council had not backed any aspirant. Randa insisted that any claims of endorsement were fabricated and not from the Luo Council.
Randa asserted that, following Raila Odinga’s death, the community currently has no recognized kingpin.
He stressed that any official communication on the matter would come directly from him as the council’s ‘ker’.
The meeting at Wandayi’s residence brought together Oburu Odinga, national executive members of the council, Siaya-based elders, and several MPs including Aduma Owuor, Elisha Odhiambo, Moses Omondi, and Antony Oluoch, alongside MCAs and clergy.
Political observers misinterpreted the gathering as an attempt to elevate Wandayi as Raila’s successor.
The elders refuted this interpretation, arguing that the reports misrepresented the purpose of their visit.
Meanwhile, succession discussions have intensified as leaders like Gladys Wanga and Babu Owino boost their visibility.
Wanga’s appearance on campaign posters and Owino’s Nyanza rallies have fueled debate over who may emerge as the next influential figure.
Despite growing political manoeuvres, the Luo Council of Elders maintains that the community has not rallied behind anyone.
They insist that identifying a future political torchbearer remains an open process that has not begun formally.
