Ahead of the 2027 general elections, President William Ruto has chosen Mwangi Kiunjuri, the MP for Laikipia East, as the essential individual to assist him regain declining support in the vote-rich Mount Kenya region.
An important ally in Ruto's plan to stabilise his political base is Kiunjuri, an experienced politician currently serving his fourth term in Parliament.
Kiunjuri has a wealth of political experience and influence in the area, having been the Agriculture Minister under previous President Uhuru Kenyatta and a close friend of the late President Mwai Kibaki.
While Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is anticipated to concentrate on the eastern counties, President Ruto is depending on Kiunjuri to bolster support in the western regions of Mount Kenya.
After a tumultuous year marked by his conflict with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the president has turned his attention back to the area.
Kiunjuri, who was one of those who backed Gachagua's ouster from office, was later named chair of the MPs caucus affiliated with Kenya Kwanza.
The impending Mbeere North by-election, where the ruling coalition aims to demonstrate its continued power in Mount Kenya, will be his first significant test. Following Geoffrey Ruku's appointment to the Cabinet, the position became vacant.
