A lively debate has emerged online after a poll by a social media user asked Kenyans a timeless political question: who was or is the greatest president in Kenya’s history?
The Twitter poll, which attracted significant attention, had garnered 8,465 votes within a few hours, drawing more than 46,000 views and sparking wide discussion across social media platforms.
According to the results shared, former president Mwai Kibaki emerged as the clear favourite, commanding 47.7 per cent of the vote.
Kibaki’s strong showing reflects enduring public appreciation for his legacy, particularly his emphasis on economic growth, infrastructure development, free primary education, and relative institutional stability during his tenure.
Many Kenyans continue to associate his presidency with technocratic governance and steady national progress.
President William Ruto followed closely with an impressive 36.9 per cent, a notable figure considering he is still serving his first term.
His support highlights a segment of the electorate that believes his administration’s policies, political resilience, and reform agenda place him among Kenya’s most impactful leaders, even as his presidency remains a work in progress.
Former president Uhuru Kenyatta ranked third with 10.7 per cent of the vote.
While his two term presidency oversaw major infrastructure projects and a historic political handshake that eased political tensions, opinions about his leadership remain divided, which appears reflected in the poll’s outcome.
Daniel arap Moi, Kenya’s second president and longest serving leader, received 4.7 per cent.
His lower ranking underscores how public perception of his legacy continues to be shaped by memories of authoritarian rule despite later reforms.
Although informal, the poll offers a snapshot of public sentiment and demonstrates how Kenya’s political history continues to influence national conversations.
