Businesses Closed in Nairobi CBD After Major Fire Along Luthuli Avenue

Several businesses in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) have been forced to shut down following a major fire that broke out along Luthuli Avenue, one of the city’s busiest commercial streets.

The fire reportedly started on Tuesday evening inside a commercial building that houses multiple electronics shops.

By Wednesday morning, police had sealed off the affected section of Luthuli Avenue as firefighters continued efforts to fully contain the blaze.

Witnesses said thick smoke could still be seen rising from the building hours after the fire began, attracting large crowds as emergency teams worked to secure the area.

Several electronics outlets suffered extensive damage, with traders counting losses as access to their shops remained restricted.

Although firefighters managed to rescue some property from the affected building, the operation took longer than expected, raising concerns among members of the public about the city’s emergency response systems.

Some business owners and passers-by expressed frustration, questioning why the fire had not been brought under control sooner.

They noted that the prolonged operation disrupted normal business activities along Luthuli Avenue, a key hub for mobile phone and electronics trade in Nairobi.

Authorities have since maintained a heavy police presence in the area to prevent looting and ensure public safety. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns about fire safety in Kenya, especially in densely populated commercial zones.

The Nairobi CBD fire comes barely days after another fire tragedy was reported in Kiambu County, where a family lost their home on New Year’s Eve.

According to reports, the fire in Kiambu was accidentally started by fireworks lit inside a bedroom by a young child. Although no injuries were recorded, the house was completely destroyed.

Following the two incidents, safety experts and members of the public have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations, improved firefighting equipment, and better public awareness on fire prevention.
