Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has revealed that he is ready to support former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i in his 2027 presidential bid, even if it means defying the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking on a Monday morning show, Onyonka stated that his loyalty to Matiang’i could see him leave ODM and join another party, including Jubilee, if advised by the former CS.
“I have so much respect for the ODM party, but if I find that I can win my seat under Jubilee while supporting Matiang’i, I will seriously consider it. I have taken my time to support him, and my decision is based on principles, not just party loyalty,” Onyonka said.
The Kisii lawmaker, who has a history of shifting between parties to maintain his political relevance, emphasized that his support for Matiang’i is not linked to any government alignment.
He firmly ruled out joining President William Ruto, affirming that he will continue to hold the government accountable ahead of the 2027 elections.
Onyonka also acknowledged the impact of Raila Odinga’s passing on ODM leaders, noting that the party is now re-strategizing to remain relevant in Kenya’s political landscape.
He expressed admiration for leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua, highlighting their steadfastness and commitment despite differing political styles.
Other ODM figures are reportedly quietly supporting Matiang’i behind the scenes, recognizing his growing influence, particularly after former President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him as Jubilee’s deputy party leader.
While the party may oppose Matiang’i’s ambitions, leaders like Onyonka indicate that individual political calculations are taking precedence over party directives, hinting at a possible reshaping of Kenya’s political alliances in the lead-up to the next general elections.
