Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has made an explosive allegation that Members of Parliament "ate the money and shafted the President" over the controversial Anti-Money Laundering Bill, leading to President William Ruto's recent public frustration with the legislature.
Speaking on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Onyonka claimed the President's anger was not about a genuine fight against corruption but was triggered by MPs failing to pass the bill in line with specific requirements set by the World Bank.
The senator alleged that a deal had been tainted from the start, with lawmakers receiving money to pass the legislation in a particular way, only to double-cross the Head of State at the final hurdle.
"When this issue came up, the dispute was because the MPs did not deliver what was expected," Onyonka stated directly.
He explained that the World Bank, which was closely monitoring the process, questioned the credibility of the bill that was eventually passed.
"The World Bank is asking, 'What is this you have done?' So the MPs who ate the money shafted the President. That is why he is upset," the senator claimed.
Onyonka used the scandal to paint a damning picture of the country's governance, describing Kenya as a nation where legislative outcomes are sold to the highest bidder.
"We have a country that is like a gambling den. Whoever that is, the highest bidder, will have his things sorted out," he said.
The senator made these claims while also clarifying his own political stance, insisting his criticism was not an attempt to join the government.
This positions his shocking allegations not as political maneuvering for a job, but as a direct accusation of high-level corruption at the heart of Parliament.
