Tensions flared on Friday, December 26, 2025, as ODM legislator Robert Alai accused several Mt Kenya leaders, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, of plotting to push the Luo community out of government.
Taking to social media, Alai claimed that Uhuru, alongside Rigathi Gachagua, Moses Kuria, and Martha Karua, are working to undermine development in Luo regions and force their leaders back to street protests.
The remarks come in response to Kuria’s earlier defense of Uhuru against Junet Mohammed’s allegations that the former president is fueling divisions in ODM with a KSh 1 billion influence bid.
Kuria had dismissed these claims as distractions from the party’s internal struggles post-Raila Odinga’s death in October 2025.
Alai, however, sees a coordinated effort, suggesting the leaders’ actions are aimed at sidelining Luos ahead of the 2027 elections.
The exchange highlights deepening ethnic and political rifts in Kenya, with ODM facing succession battles and accusations of infiltration by rivals.
All these said, political analysts warn that such rhetoric could escalate tensions, especially with UDA eyeing ODM strongholds like Nyanza.
Public reactions on X range from skepticism to outrage, reflecting the polarized mood.
