The polls also gave more details about the politics inside the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. Many people who took part in the poll were asked who they think should take over leadership after the death of former party leader Raila Odinga.
This question attracted a lot of attention because Raila had led ODM and the Luo community for many years. From the results, many respondents said they prefer Embakasi East MP Babu Owino to take over.
Many people see Babu as bold, noisy, and fearless. His supporters say he speaks strongly for poor people and the youth, just like Raila used to do. Others feel that Babu has the energy and courage needed to keep ODM strong and active in national politics.
The poll also showed that Babu Owino is popular not only in ODM but also among the Luo community and people who supported Raila Odinga before.
Babu led the list with 33 per cent support. This means many people believe he is the right person to carry Raila’s political spirit forward. His support was far ahead of the rest.
ODM party leader Oburu Odinga came second with 10 per cent. Oburu is Raila’s elder brother and is seen as a senior and calm leader. Some respondents said they trust his experience and believe he understands the party well.
Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga came third with seven per cent. Many people see her as hardworking and good at mobilising supporters, especially women.
Siaya Governor James Orengo got four per cent support. Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo each got two per cent.
Their low numbers suggest that many people still see them more as government workers than strong political leaders on the ground.
Other leaders also appeared in the poll but with small numbers. Winnie Odinga, Treasury CS John Mbadi, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, and Miguna Miguna each got one per cent. This shows that although many names are mentioned, only a few are seen as serious leaders for now.
In general, the poll shows that ODM supporters are already thinking about the future. They want a leader who can protect Raila Odinga’s legacy and keep the party strong moving forward.
